Steven Bird is a computational linguist and technologist at Berkeley's International Computer Science Institute. In this discussion on digital language preservation at The Interval, he showcased his still-in-development Aikuma app — a tool for recording speech in a number of unwritten langauges for preservation. He ran a hands-on demonstration of the app, facilitated a discussion of some thorny issues it raised, and shared some of his ingenious solutions.
