Gary Hustwit's Eno

A new documentary on Long Now cofounder Brian Eno is different every time it is screened.

Eno, Gary Hustwit’s generative documentary film on the life and work of Long Now co-founder Brian Eno, premiered at the 02024 Sundance Film Festival. Since then, Hustwit has been touring around the country showing the film — and every time he screens it, Eno is a new movie.

Inspired by Eno's own use of generative algorithms in music and visual art, Hustwit has used a software program to ensure that every screening of Eno is different. All told, there are 52 quintillion possible iterations of the film.

Eno has received acclaim in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. Learn more, and see where to screen Eno, on Hustwit's site.

What is the long now?

The Long Now Foundation is a nonprofit established in 01996 to foster long-term thinking. Our work encourages imagination at the timescale of civilization — the next and last 10,000 years — a timespan we call the long now.
