Long Now Research Fellow
Dan Richardson is chief executive officer and co-founder of Helixaeon Inc, a time and data management technology company that creates tools for long-term thinking, planning, and action.
Dan's interest in the long arc of time began when he first encountered the Cosmic Calendar presented by Carl Sagan in the original 01980 Cosmos series. Dan struggled to reconcile why this representation of time omitted the future. He began designing and constructing alternative models of time for his own use in the late 01990’s.
While studying architecture and environmental design, Dan was attracted to the intersection of technology, creativity, and communication. This led him to a career as a professional creative in advertising, publishing, and digital media. His art direction and design work gained international awards and recognition.
Dan’s attention shifted to developing mobile and web applications as a creative director, experience designer, and inventor. He has been granted multiple utility and design patents for his software and interface designs. Dan’s helical time framework was used to communicate climate data at the 02018 UN COP24 conference in Poland. His nested helical model of time was featured in a documentary shown at Sundance 02019, The World Economic Forum in Davos, SXSW, and NASA.
Dan is currently focused on creating applications that expand people’s perception of time and their sense of agency within it.
